As the seasons shift so does the light and the ground around us. For years this pattern has sat sketched in Megan Gilger's notebook. Over and over a symbol of what it is to live amongst the seasons here in Northern Michigan. A simple pattern that represents the sun's glow over as it moves through each season.
Made from a hand-carved block and hand block printed by Megan, each artwork is done on handmade paper from Paperworks Studio in Traverse City, Michigan. Created as a non-profit to help adults with disabilities, they provide consistent creative work within the community using traditional paper-making methods many times with upcycled materials and/or from plants that are removed for being invassive to the area. Our paper for these prints is made out of garlic mustard, which is an invasive species amongst the dunes on the lakeshore here. By putting these plants to use, we can do a lot of good; a small piece of the dunes is removed to save the beauty of the area and allow for creative jobs to members of our community, all of which emphasizes what makes these prints all the more special.
So from design to the paper, we created a print that has a deeper meaning than just something that will decorate the walls of your home; each print connects the lines of community and creativity in the community here in Northern Michigan.
